Days 1-3: Cape Town-Table Mountain-Robben Island
We begin with a vigorous hike up fabulous Table Mountain and breathtaking views of Cape Town below. After descending by cable car, we head for Robben Island. Our tour here is conducted by an ex-political prisoner who brings to life South African heritage and the triumph of the human spirit. The following day is free to explore Cape Town and engage in the activity of your choice, ranging from a windsurfing lesson, mountain biking, a boat trip to Seal Island, or a visit to the Gold of Africa Museum.
Days 4-6: Franschoek Valley-Grootbos Nature Reserve
En route to three glorious days at Grootbos Nature Reserve, we visit the Franschoek Valley with its rich history of wine making, with ample time for a couple tastings. From Grootbos we embark on a day of wildlife viewing with a boat trip full of whales, dolphins, penguins, fur seals and Great While Sharks. Returning to the Reserve, there is time for a hike through the flowering fybos and milkwood thickets. The final day at Grotbos prvides opportunities to explore Klipgat Cave, housing prehistoric remnants from 70,000 years ago, horseback riding, coastal drives, guided hikes, bird watching or any of a number of additonal tours.
Days 7-11: Kariega Game Reserve
We return to Cape Town to catch our one-hour flight to Port Eliizabeth. A 40-minute transfer brings us to Kariega Game Reserve. We arrive at the lodge by river cruise in plenty of time for a game drive. Likely viewings include lion, leopard, elephant, black and white rhino, buffalo, hyena, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, zebra and a multitude of antelope species. After an early morning game drive the following day, we cruise up the Bushman's River to begin a walking safari to our fly camp. We're met with a real bush campfire meal and later enjoy the spectacular Milky Way stargazing show. A final day at Kariega has opportunities for more game drives, beach time at Kenton-on-sea, hiking in the predator-fee part of the Reserve, canoeing and fishing.
